Amazing Memory Loss

While watching “Morning Joe” this morning, host Joe Scarborough started screaming and whining about how “George W. Bush is the most viciously attacked President in history. No president has taken the kind of abuse from his own countrymen as George W. Bush.”

Amazing. Apparently, Mr. Scarborough wasn’t in the country, or is suffering from amnesia, for the period 1992-2000.

For Billy Dennis. This is the definition of commentary, and the fact that it’s right on only accentuates how well it’s done.

Bravo, sir. Well said. Well said.

Now that John McCain has secured enough delegates to lock Mike “I Didn’t Major In Math” Huckabee out of the GOP presidential race, Ann…or should I say Stan…Coulter is supposed to be campaigning for Hillary Clinton.

To quote the great Judge Smails of Bushwood…

Fixed News, Faux News, Take Your Pick

Hilarious headlines abound on Fixed/Faux News.com this morning. Among my favorites:

  • “Women, Gay Men Are Worst Drivers”
  • “Image of Jesus Appears In Potato”
  • “Lesbian Lock Up”
  • “Taser Parties Are The New Craze”

and, of course, under the banner “Breaking News“: “Britney Spears Released From Hospital”

When your political agenda sucks, I guess these are the headlines that best distract the public from the truth.

UPDATE: While ABC aired a GOP Presidential Debate live last night (Saturday Jan 5), while CNN was doing a story about the terrible housing market, while MSNBC was giving analysis on both the Dem and Repub presidential races, Faux was doing a 15-minute expose on Britney Spears’ finances and her current troubles.

Amazing.

An Outstanding Observation

Scenario: I’m sitting at the computer, TV over my left shoulder is tuned into ESPN, Chris Berman and the boys are talking football. Diane is over by the vanity, preparing for the day.

I’m not paying attention, but apparently the announcers said something about Green Bay and a certain offensive position, bringing this retort from Diane:

“I don’t know if it’s a good thing to be the tight end for the Packers.”

Ah, yes, out of the mouths of babes. And she is a babe.

Is TV Really This Bad?

Whipping through the dial this morning (Sunday), looking for something to watch for awhile before heading outside, and I see this on TBS: “Fresh Prince Marathon”.

Are you serious? A marathon of “Fresh Prince” episodes?

That’s like Speed running “Best of Ford: The Pinto Years”.

That’s like MTV running a Milli Vanilli marathon.

It’s like C-Span showing “George W. Bush: His Best Decisions” (okay, that would just be dead air for several hours)

That’s like ESPN running a marathon of Chicago Cubs World Series highlights. (see: GWB above)

I just watched a reporter on the ABC affiliate in the Quad Cities use the following words in her story about a cropduster accident in Prophetstown:

“…he was shooken up…”  That’s right, she said “shooken”. Amazing.

Then, not two sentences later, it was this:

“…nodoubtably…” Not “undoubtedly”, but “nodoubtably”. Wow.

This was the same station that used the words “he pled guilty” a couple of weeks back, not an egregious mistake, but still wrong, according to the AP Style Book, which prefers “pleaded”.

They need to do some work over there on a little thing called “English”.

Not A Very Smart Person

On the same edition of Hannity and Colmes that I saw the report about Broward County, they had something called a “Dan Senor” on to discuss Iran.

”Dan Senor”, another idiotic chickenhawk who wants to drop everything and bomb Iran right now, and who never himself served, went on and on and on about all the things Iran is to blame for in Iraq, Isreal, Lebanon and everywhere else right now as if it’s established fact and his word is law. This, of course, on the heels of the recent replacement of(wonder why) Chairman of the Joint Chiefs Pete Pace, who went on record in February as saying there was no evidence that Iran was supplying Shiite fighters with bombs and ammunition.

Senor spent 10 minutes wagging the dog, Hannity conveniently kept his mouth shut for most of it, but Colmes (amazingly) fought back pretty hard.

Tell ya what, “Dan Senor”, whatever you are, you get a uniform, a helmet, and a rifle, and you go ahead and lead the charge into Iran if you’re so sure. Quit talking out of your butt and put that butt in the line of fire, ok?

Words To Good Not To Share

I’m in an online simulated baseball league with 27 other guys from all across North America (yes, we have a Canuck or two) and the neat thing about our little “community” is how we talk about everything, not just baseball. Baseball has become secondary quite often to talk of families, kids, politics, culture, media, etc.

So I received an email from one of the guys the other night, an attorney in a large Southern city, and I can’t keep it to myself. Everyone (or at least the few that come in here and read the rants) needs to read these words from my buddy Dan:

“To me, the White House’s multiple acts of clearly running roughshod over the Constitution is a bigger deal than is the mistaken decision to go into Iraq.

Mind you, I’m not defending the decision to go into Iraq or to stay there now.  But I do think that it is not inherently wrong to commence war to remove the world of an evil dictator.  We would have been justified in joining England in declaring war on Germany when Hitler invaded Poland rather than wait until after Pearl Harbor.  We could have been justified into invading Iraq to rid the world of Hussein even if there was no credible threat directly against us.  But to do so, we needed to have thought through the consequences, including strengthening Iran and the religious fundamentalists in the Middle East, together with the sectarian violence that was long repressed by Hussein’s acts. Fighting a war in Iraq, even as aggressors, was / is not inherently wrong, but fighting a war designed primarily to seek vengeance because of a verbal threat made against one’s father, or to line the pockets of Halliburton investors, is.

Anyway, what the Comey testimony, together with the warrantless wire tapping, Gitmo quasi-trials, torture of prisoners, deprivation of right to access the courts, etc. shows is a President who believes that he is above the rule of law.  We are a country of laws, not one of men.  When a man, however powerful, can ignore the law, what this country stands for crumbles.  There may be some very limited situations where the Jesuit approach of the ends justifying the means may be warranted; here, clearly, is not one of them.  This is a story that should be shouted from the rooftops, this is a story that warrants impeachment, this is a story that the man elected president and his closest and most trusted advisors do not believe in the very foundation of what makes this country great.”

Stewart vs. McCain = Great TV

Watching Jon Stewart and John McCain go at it last night was awesome. And they shook hands at the end. Tell me again why “The Daily Show” is not a better way to get news than CNN, MSNBC, or Faux?

McCain fought gamely, and admitted how poorly the Bushies have run the “war” (did anyone ever declare war on anyone, or is this still just an illegal attack and occupation of a soveriegn nation?), but Stewart scored with some indefensible facts and tremendous analogies.

It was a great debate.

More media thoughts

In the last two days, I have witnessed countless times where the host, whether it be Faux, CNN, MSNBC, or the so-called “major” networks, have tried to create the story, tried to blame “the school”, or “campus police”, for the entire incident at Virginia Tech.

In nearly every response, the student, parent, or official says the same thing, “I’m not blaming the school, there is no way for anyone to be prepared totally for this” and “the police are not to blame, they did what they thought was right”, and “the only person I’m mad at is the killer.”

Yet the talking heads persist. Stone Phillips (worst. newsman. ever.) and his fake voice and fake concern and pre-determined attempts at emotion was positively the worst last night. He asked the same kid THREE times, including a “yeah, but aren’t you angry at the school for not letting you know about the first incident” and the kid kept saying the same thing…”no. They did what they thought was right, and who’s to say anyone else would have done it any differently?”

Why is the media…ALL television media, be they liberal or conservative…so determined to blame everyone and everything but the f’ing guns and the f’ing killer? Maybe the NRA is helping to produce and direct the news shows. I dunno. But it sure is getting embarrassing for a fellow member of the media to watch other journalists refuse to listen and continue to push an agenda at these people that don’t want to hear it.

I thought it was very telling when the President of the University stood up in the basketball arena yesterday (the guy who has been villified by the cables and networks) and got a lengthy, supportive and heartfelt standing ovation from students, parents, and everyone else in that arena. Did the media not see it? They should have, they were all airing it.

Here we go

It’s 3:30 pm Central time, and Faux News is already playing the blame game on the Virginia Tech incident. Some loudmouth woman is telling the pathetically bad Neil Cavuto that the University is solely to blame for this incident spiraling today.

“Officials should have locked down campus at 7:30.”

“These students shouldn’t have been allowed to go to class, the school failed in providing their safety.”

Hey, dammit, when is the “blame” going to be placed on the f’ing weapon(s) and the guy who used the weapon(s)?

This lady is insinuating that VT officials were responsible for the 30 people dead after the initial dorm incident. So it’s not the fault of the psychopathic, gun-toting individual (that may be redundant, sorry) who killed almost three dozen people today.

Freakin’ amazing. The focus should be on taking care of the families who’ve lost loved ones, on the injured fighting for their lives, and on whether or not this guy acted alone, and whether or not there is still a danger on campus. NOT on who to blame. Anything to take the focus off the fact that guns needlessly killed 31 more people today, I guess.

Virginia, BTW, is a conceal and carry state, let’s see how the NRA is going to try and spin this one.

UPDATE: CNN had the same blowhard woman on tonight from some security website and she is a complete idiot. And CNN host Paula Zahn tried to create the news instead of report it, as she asked leading questions to students she interviewed, like “aren’t you angry?” and “people are angry. They should be, don’t you think?” all regarding the supposed slow response of Blacksburg authorities.

Now it’s possible that there were two unrelated incidents. If THAT is true, there’s a bunch of news anchors and cable stations that will be eating serious crow (but they won’t, ego won’t allow).

Also, what’s with the “outrage” that the school didn’t send out emails quick enough? The blowhard lady also said “the technology is there to text all 26,000 phones and tell them what is going on.”

Um, no. That’s ASSUMING 26,000 students would all check their email within an hour or two of each other. Not gonna happen. Also, the blowhard lady is ASSUMING all 26,000 students have phones, and all have text messaging, and that all phones would be on (not turned off for an 8am or 9am class). Ridiculous assumptions and attacks on police being made all day today by FauxNews, CNN, and the blowhard lady. I’m quite disappointed in the coverage.

One final thought…I’m also quite disappointed that these stations have gone wall-to-wall with this coverage. It is indeed the biggest news in the United States today. But it is NOT the only news. There is NO reason that these networks can’t do a five-minute break in every hour to tell us what else is going on in the world. Billy Dennis is going to hate me for saying this, but there won’t be a newspaper in the country that will be cover-to-cover Virginia Tech tomorrow morning. Nope, they’ll still have local news, other national and world news, sports, and weather. Big thumbs down to Faux and CNN tonight. Big.
