About a mile south of Kewanee, a friend of mine has a nice little used car lot. Every once in awhile, heading South on my commute, I glance over to check his inventory and see, way in the back, darn near 100% hidden from the view of passing traffic, a Henry Co. deputy, backed into a row, facing the road, ready to pounce on a dreaded speeder.
Full disclosure: anyone who knows anything about me knows that I think police spend about 237,000 times too much of their energy on arresting “speeders”, when there are far more dangerous drivers on the road…but I digress…
Like I’ve said a million and six times, I don’t have a problem with peace officers doing their job, and in some cases even “hiding out” a little bit to create a speed trap. SOME cases. But there’s just something about this little hiding spot that doesn’t seem right to me. Something smarmy about it. Sneaky. Disingenuous, if you will.
It just seems to be a bit much. Am I wrong?

Here is how the State of Texas dealt with it: they limited how much money a municipality could keep per year from traffic tickets.
When they whined about the State affecting their safety, the state replied that they would WRITE all the tickets they wanted, but after a certain amount, they couldn’t keep the money.
THAT put an end to the speed trap industry.

What’s more, isn’t it private property? Shouldn’t they have to get permission from the property owner to do that?
I used to see a squad car parked in the day care center next to the radio station either first thing in the morning, or last thing at night if I was there late.
Must be nice to go wherever you want, whenever you want.
