Roads Taking an Absolute Beating

Anybody ever remember Illinois’ highways in such bad shape after a hard winter like this? The underpass in Laura on Route 78 would make the organizers of the Baja 100 proud. I set a new record in the Charger the other morning, hitting a rut and flying OVER the train tracks instead of driving under tracks.

Weather and road experts, help me out: What’s causing such significant heaving and sinking in the roads right now? Have we had abnormal temp changes? Weird moisture patterns? The mole people are doing lots of construction way down deep right now?

It’s probably just good old water and a little salt when it comes to asphalt. Add freezing and thawing water and you have a recipe (if you have the time) for a mountain leveler.
